Can You Use Voice Control Without Internet Connection?

Voice control has become one of the most popular technological features in recent memory. Many people are using voice control every day, but some people may not know whether they can use their voice control without an internet connection or if they can only use it if they have a WiFi connection.

You can use voice control without an internet connection. There are two types of voice control: cloud-based voice control and embedded voice control. Cloud-based voice control needs the internet, while embedded voice control does not.

Since voice control is so popular, it is important to understand how you can use it without an internet connection. The more you know about how voice control works, the better you will be at using it. Read on to discover more about using voice control without an internet connection.

Using Voice Control without Internet Connection

Sometimes you do not have the time to stop what you are doing and write a full text. You would turn to the voice control “shortcut” to dictate the message. Other times you may be in a place where you cannot manually use your phone, such as when you are driving. Again, you would turn to voice control.

Voice control is a major part of people’s lives in the 21st century. Statistics say that upward of 49 per cent of people use voice control once a week while only six per cent of people have never used it nor plan to. The numbers do not lie. Voice control is a popular feature.

Understanding how voice control applications work is key to getting the most out of the feature. You may or may not know whether you can use your voice control features without the internet. The answer depends on how the feature is set up. There are two ways voice control is set up on your device:

  • Cloud-based voice control
  • Embedded voice control

Depending on which you use will determine whether or not you can use your voice control feature without the internet.

Cloud-Based Voice Control

The first way in which you can set up voice control on your device is to use a cloud-based option.

As the name implies, a cloud-based voice control uses the cloud to run. There are benefits to using this format. The biggest is that it does not take up much space at all on your device.

Using cloud-based voice control means you can use your voice control for everything on your phone. However, with cloud-based voice control, you need to have an internet connection for it to work.

This can become tricky if you are out of range of an internet signal.

Embedded Voice Control

The second way to set up your voice control is to use embedded voice control. Essentially, this means that the voice control is set up directly in your device.

Unlike cloud-based voice control, an embedded voice control does take up a fair amount of space on your device, so be sure you have the space for this to work.

How to Use Voice Control on Your Phone

For your voice control to work on your phone, it must be turned on. Once the voice control has been activated on your phone, you will be able to use it.

Additionally, when the voice control is downloaded directly onto your phone and is activated, you can use it without an internet connection.

  • Apple Devices: To turn on voice control on an Apple device, you must first navigate to your settings and select “Accessibility.” Once there, you will select “Voice Control” and then “Set Up.” This will activate a download. You know when the download is complete when a small microphone icon appears.
  • Android Devices: To turn on voice control on an Android device, you must first download the Google app. In the bottom right-hand corner, you will see three dots. You have to click them. Then you will click “Settings” and then “Voice.” Click “Voice Match.” Then you will switch “Hey Google” on. This activates the feature.

Once the voice control is activated, you will be able to voice commands. These commands can help you cover a wide variety of tasks, from dictation to setting reminders.

What Can Voice Control Be Used For?

Voice control can be used for a multitude of features on your phone. It is not limited to just asking your phone to search the internet for the answer to some question you may have.

It can be used for most commands you would normally do manually on your phone.

The versatility of voice control is one of the reasons it is popular. It can be used throughout your device with ease.

Additionally, voice control is a security feature. Your voice is not stored by the manufacturers. It is used solely for your use and your commands on your device.

Voice Assistant without Internet

What about a voice assistant like Alexa? Voice assistants work similarly to voice control. They are what you see in people’s homes. Some example of voice assistants include:

  • Amazon Echo
  • Google Home
  • Saiy (App-Based)

Do these devices need the internet to work? It depends. Some need an internet connection to work.

However, in 2018, Amazon released an Echo that could be locally housed, which meant that you could use the voice assistant without the internet.

Google Home can only be used with limited features without WiFi. For example, you can still use your Google Home as a Bluetooth speaker. Otherwise, you will have to find an internet connection or discover an internet hotspot to make your device operate fully.

Why Use Voice Control?

As mentioned, voice control is versatile. It is useful in many situations. But why use it at all? Well, voice control has several benefits that make it worthwhile.

  • People with disabilities. If you have an impairment of some kind that limits the mobility in your hands, then voice control will be helpful. It allows you to write messages, schedule appointments, set reminders, and more without having to use your hands.
  • Language barriers. If you are traveling, or are just interacting with people who speak a different language, voice control is quite useful. You can dictate your messages and have them translated in real-time without having to manually find the translation. It makes communication much easier.
  • Learning. Voice control is also an excellent resource if you are doing online learning on your phone. It allows you to interact more with the material vocally, which can help your memory of those items.

Being able to use voice control without the internet is important. Since voice control is hands-free, it is versatile. When you couple that with the above-mentioned benefits, you have a great feature that can be used anywhere at any time.

Home Streamliner’s Take

You can use voice control without an internet connection. It depends on how your voice control is set up on your phone. If it is cloud-based, it will need an internet connection to work.

However, if you use embedded voice control that is downloaded directly onto your device, then you can use the feature anywhere you are.

Voice assistants, by contrast, generally need an internet connection to work. Without an internet connection, they will be limited in the features that will work.

Nevertheless, voice control is a versatile feature that has many benefits. When used without the internet, how and when you use it is limitless.
